FOCUS of Field Observations: to give candidates a broad view of the school and to a specific view of diversity, classroom management and professionalism.

  • Fall Term (Typically)
  • On-site 10 hours per week minimum (100 hours total)
  • Structured observation hours related to methods courses.
  • Teacher candidates log their hours in TK20 under “Time Logs.” At the end of the term submit hours via TK20 to your CT for review and approval.
  • Candidates can observe, work with groups, assist the teacher in teaching or administrative tasks, or teach an occasional lesson with the CT’s consent.

Candidates are not supervised this term by a University Supervisor. It is the responsibility of the candidate to negotiate a schedule with the cooperating teachers (CTs) at the beginning of the term that works for both the candidate and the CT. Once the schedule is established, the candidate is expected be at school on set days for the specified number of hours, barring emergency. If the candidate is unable to attend as scheduled, he or she must contact the teacher as soon as possible so alternate plans can be made.

Student Expectations:

Teacher Candidates are not supervised by a University Supervisor during this placement / term. It is the responsibility of the candidate to negotiate a schedule with the cooperating teachers (CTs) at the beginning of the term that works for both the candidate and the CT. Once the schedule is established:

  • Teacher candidates are expected to be at their school sites at scheduled times.
  • Should illness or unexpected emergencies arise that preclude being on-site, candidates must contact their CT(s) in a timely manner.
  • Hours missed due to an absence of any kind must be made up.

Time Log Reporting:

  • Log daily hours and activity in TK20 under Time Logs. Submit final to cooperating teachers for approval at the end of the term
  • Complete a separate TK20 time log for ESOL classroom hours. Submit final to Cooperating Teachers for sign off at the end of the term.
  • Time Logs are submit through TK20 at end of term.
