Overview

Welcoming Schools is a comprehensive approach to addressing family diversity, avoiding gender stereotyping and ending bullying.

The Oregon Safe Schools Act of 2009 enumerated earlier state law related to school anti-bullying policy to educate and protect all students

Objectives

  • Learn the facts related to marginalization and discrimination related to the gender identity and sexual orientation minority community in schools.
  • Learn the Oregon school statistics for LGBTQ youth, families, and educators.
  • Learn the Oregon law, policy and curriculum practice related to the gender identity and sexual orientation minority community.
  • Learn curriculum and pedagogy to support these youth and families.

Activities

Adaptation for students unable to attend

Prepare a typed 5-page summary/response to the readings and videos covered during the workshop, include the following subsections:

  1. A short summary of key points from each reading
  2. A summary reflection on the videos
  3. Share an issue you find particularly important to you as a future teacher from the Oregon Safe Schools report.
