Preparing for your scholarship application

  • Review the estimated Tuition and Fees for the program
  • Schedule time to research and apply for scholarships
  • Focus on awards in which you qualify
  • Gather application materials early and Meet the Deadlines!

•    References

  • What are the scholarship recommendation requirements (faculty, coach, advisor, employers, etc)
  • It is often best to let your reference know if you are applying to multiple programs and scholarships, so they can keep a copy of their original write up.
  • Ask in advance and be clear how and when they submit their reference (e.g. is a reference form sent to them via an email link or do they need to submit a letter of reference).
  • Make sure the recommender knows you well and will give a positive reference
    • Provide them with a write up about the program and scholarships you are applying for and the deadlines.
    • Provide them with an outline of why you asked them to be your reference and what you think they can speak to. Include a copy of your resume.
    • Confirm which email they would like you to have the reference sent.
  • Thank them for their time and inform them of the outcome and your decision, regardless.

•    Essays

  • Give yourself plenty of time to work on the essay. Use your program application as a foundation for your scholarship application.
  • Don’t go over the scholarship’s length requirements (less is better!)
  • Draw the reader in, make yourself sound
  • Check for spelling errors.
  • Keep your essay for future use, but don’t copy & paste word for
